International Appeal for Star Ferry

Mr Donald Tsang,
Chief Executive,
Hong Kong SAR Government

Dear Chief Executive,

Re: Urgent Appeal for In-situ Preservation of Star Ferry and Queen’s Pier

We are alarmed at your government’s plan to demolish two of Hong Kong’s most prized heritage assets: the Star Ferry and the Queen’s Piers. These two Piers and the embedded public spaces constitute one of the most unique historical settings in modern Hong Kong, witnessing Hong Kong’s emergence as an international financial centre.

We are convinced that such demolition plan will have many negative impacts to Hong Kong: irreversible damage to the city’s cultural heritage, erosion of its attractiveness to foreign visitors, and above all, tarnishing of Hong Kong’s image as a city of strong local identity.

We are concerned about the sustainability of Hong Kong’s culture. The demolition of these sites will cause an irreversible damage to Hong Kong’s competitiveness in the travel market. As a member of the international community we would like to make the following urgent appeal to your government:

• Stop the demolition plan;
• Preserve the Star Ferry and the Queen’s Piers in-situ;
• Manage the two sites as cultural heritage for the benefit of all.

We hope your government will have the wisdom and courage to do the right thing for Hong Kong.
