Australia’s largest and longest running festival of design, Sydney Design 06 celebrates a decade of design excellence with a program of international speakers and exhibitions, running over 16 days and 24 venues from 5-20 August 2006.
Sydney Design 06 marks the tenth anniversary of Australia’s premier design festival. Produced annually by the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Design showcases home-grown and international talent across the breadth of design and encourages us to consider the ways design and architecture shape our lives.
This year’s program features over 70 events at 40 venues across Sydney. The Powerhouse Museum and its many partners in design bring you a 16-day festival packed with exhibitions, seminars and speakers, film screenings, designer markets, walks and tours, awards and competitions.

Acting as the Festival’s hub, the Powerhouse Museum hosts the majority of events and exhibitions. Other Sydney venues including Object Gallery, Historic Houses Trust, Museum of Contemporary Art, Museum of Sydney, Royal Botanic Gardens, Sydney Opera House and Parramatta CBD will also play host to international and local speakers, tours exhibitions and film screenings.
Paris-based industrial designer, Matali Crasset who will present a design talk on Thursday 17 August, highlights the Powerhouse Museum program. A protégé of Philippe Starck, her internationally acclaimed work spans across a broad range of mediums including interiors, graphics, furniture, lighting, and electronic products.
In your face: contemporary graphic design, an exhibition showcasing Australian graphic and visual communication design will present sixteen exciting case studies of contemporary Australian graphic design juxtaposed against historical pieces from the Museum’s 20th Century Australian graphic design archive from 5-20 August.
The Museum will also present an exclusive preview screening of Unfolding Florence: The Many Lives of Florence Broadhurst on 13 August. This highly original and spirited documentary by acclaimed Australian director Gillian Armstrong reveals the fascinating life of a flamboyant design pioneer.
The Young Blood: designers market will return after its hugely successful inaugural year with an extended two day event on 11 and 12 August. Australia’s best and brightest designers will converge in the Museum courtyard to sell their wares from fashion to furniture, jewellery, graphic, product, landscape and lighting design.
